First Microsoft buys Activision Blizzard, now Sony buys Bungie. The battle of the giants goes to the next round. Will Destiny be PS exclusive soon?

We recently reported on what was probably the biggest deal in gaming history, when Microsoft comprou a Activision Blizzard by amazing US $ 70 billion. As a reaction to this, the next deal comes out of nowhere, albeit not that big. Just now, it has been announced that Sony has purchased the well-known developer Bungie.

What are the implications of this agreement and what does it mean for the PlayStation and the Xbox? Let's take a look at what we know so far.

Here's PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst's tweet about the Bungie purchase:

I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome Bungie to the PlayStation family! Bungie create community-driven games with outstanding technology that are enormous fun to play, and I know that everyone at PlayStation Studios will be excited about what we can share and learn together. pic.twitter.com/VySocfBxtx

Sony assume a Bungie

At a measly $3,6 billion, Bungie is significantly cheaper than Activision Blizzard, but that's no surprise given that Activision is a publisher with multiple studios and franchises, while Bungie is "just" a development studio. .

Most players know Bungie from early Halo games before handing development over to 343 Industries and starting a new success story with Destiny.

Bungie has always been known for delivering extremely good shooter gameplay, especially on consoles - after all, that's what made Halo so popular in the beginning and keeps Destiny alive today. In addition, the studio works closely with its community, listens to suggestions and lovingly cares for its titles even after years.

Will Destiny be a PlayStation exclusive?

After Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, one of the most important questions was if Call of Duty would become an Xbox exclusive . That would mean PlayStation would miss out on its most successful shooter, as CoD has a huge PS community.

While it's already been confirmed that CoD will continue to release on PlayStation, Sony's purchase of Bungie now secures a studio that would be able to provide an excellent CoD shooter replacement for the PlayStation.

But to get back to the question of whether Destiny or other Bungie titles will be PS exclusives in the future: No. Bungie wrote the following in its blog about the acquisition:

We remain in charge of our Destiny. We will continue to independently publish and develop our games creatively. We will continue to promote a unified Bungie community. Our games will continue where our community is, wherever they choose to play. With support from SIE, the most immediate change you will see is an acceleration in the hiring of talent across the studio to support our ambitious vision. If that speaks to you and you want to help us put a stamp on the universe, we are hiring across all disciplines for Destiny 2 and all new worlds beyond. In
