A new patent has been published by Sony Interactive Entertainment that seems to suggest a new mobile-style controller is in development. Is a new portable PlayStation on the way?

The likelihood of a new PSP or PSVita being in development is likely slim, but Sony CEO Jim Ryan has previously stated that the company will bring some original titles to mobile devices in March 2022.

Many fans will likely be aware that Sony has recently been dedicated to bringing a number of PlayStation exclusive titles such as God of War, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, and more to PC. Suggesting that the company is extremely interested in branching out its games to devices other than PlayStation consoles.

But if playing Sony titles on a PlayStation or PC isn't enough for you, the latest patent suggests that taking your games on the go will get a whole lot easier.

As spotted by VGC, a new patent was recently published by Sony Interactive Entertainment's Japan Division for what appears to be a mobile-style controller.

The patented design can be seen in the image below and it looks a lot like the DualShock controller for the PlayStation 4 rather than the newer DualSense controller for the PlayStation XNUMX. PlayStation 5.

The only difference that sets it apart from the original DualShock controller is the much larger touchpad/screen at the center of the device. The patent description states that it is "a left hand handle part and a right hand handle part gripped by the left and right hands of the wearer".

Although it also includes “a shaft part that can be tilted by the user and detect the tilt direction and tilt amount of the shaft part”.

Details of how exactly this controller will work are still unknown, but it will likely use PlayStation Remote Play or cloud resources to stream its games directly to the device.
