According to various reports in the business press, the Microsoft was in negotiations to buy the Discord for close to US $ 10 billion earlier this year. According to the Bloomberg , the messaging platform turned down the offer in April to focus on a possible long-term public listing.
Discord was founded in 2015 as a platform for video game players to chat while playing online. Today, there are more than 140 million monthly users, with many communities dedicated to a variety of gaming-related topics and more.
The platform was revamped last summer as the company tried to move away from its gaming focus and appeal to a wider audience.
According to an analysis by Ampere of Microsoft's potential deal with Discord, any console platform holder partnering with Discord would have access to business-value enthusiast gamers who are active on devices beyond their core reach.
“Less than half of all US Discord users in our survey consider themselves console gamers, and users have a much higher-than-average propensity to play 'away from home,'” wrote research director Piers Harding- rolls.
“Ampere survey data shows that 79% of PS4 and PS4 Pro users aged 16-64 in the US used Discord in the past year.
Acquiring Discord would give Microsoft a better look at how gamers are playing on non-Microsoft devices and, crucially, have the platform on which many third-party brands are engaging with gamers through their own community efforts. ”
