A Sony will begin production on a hardware redesign of the PlayStation 5 in 2022.

This is according to the business website of Taiwan DigiTimes , which claims that vendors including semiconductor foundry TSMC are planning to start producing the redesigned PS5 console between the second and third quarters of next year.

As noted by analyst at Kantan Games, Dr. Serkan Toto , DigiTimes supply chain sources say the redesigned PS5 will come with a “new semi-custom” 6nm CPU from AMD.

The redesign is likely to be purely component-focused and will not introduce any significant external changes.

Sony recently said that supply of PS5 consoles is unlikely to improve dramatically in its current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2022.

However, during an investor call following the publication of record financial results from the PlayStation , the CFO is Sony, Hiroki Totoki, said the company was considering various solutions to help it address the global shortage of power components. hardware , including potentially changing hardware designs or outsourcing secondary vendors.

“As I said before, our goal is to have more sales volume than the PS4 [during year 2]. But can we dramatically increase the supply? No, that is not likely,” he said.

“The shortage of semiconductors is one factor, but there are other factors that will impact production volume. So right now, we'd like to aim to [beat] the second year sales of 14,8 million, which was the second year of the PS4. ”

Asked specifically about the semiconductor shortage, which is affecting every consumer electronics industry, from smart phones to automobiles, Totoki suggested that the Sony had the means to deal with the situation.

“For example, we could maybe find a secondary feature, or by changing the design, we could deal with that,” the executive said.

Following the “unprecedented” consumer demand for the PS5, the Sony stated that the platform registered â€śthe biggest console release of all time” .

The PS5 sold 4,5 million units during the launch quarter and an additional 3,3 million units in the quarter ended March 31, 2021, according to Sony. This means that total shipments reached 7,8 million in the first two quarters since launching in November 2020, surpassing the 7,6 million sales achieved by PlayStation 4 during the same period.

The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan, declined to guarantee that the company will be able to satisfy demand for the PS5 until the 2021 holiday sales season, noting in a February interview with Financial Times that “there are very few magic wands that can be waved”, although he said the supply situation will improve throughout the year.

“It will improve every month throughout 2021”, said Ryan. “The pace of improvement in the supply chain will increase throughout the year, so when we get to the second half of [2021] you will see really decent numbers.”
