Players, regardless of platform, can now play Overwatch together, just in time to earn some new cosmetics.

Overwatch is finally achieving cross-play between PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, uniting the game's community and hopefully resulting in less matchmaking time for players.

Players will need to connect their Xbox, Nintendo or PSN account to Battle.net. This will allow players to team up with friends regardless of platform for Quick Play, Arcade and custom games. Console players on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch will be able to play competitive matches together, while PC players can only play with other PC users when it comes to Competitive.

Cross-play will be automatically enabled for players on PC. Players can opt out of the cross game if they wish.

Coinciding with the cross-game launch is the limited-time Ashe's Deadlock Challenge, which offers unique rewards for both playing and watching Overwatch. Playing 27 games during the duration of the challenge will give players a new Legendary Ashe and BOB skin. And if 27 games seems like a lot, don't worry, winning a game counts as two games played. Players can also watch up to six hours of Overwatch on Twitch to score some new sprays.

The event goes hand-in-hand with a new Ashe-focused Overwatch novel by author Lyndsay Ely titled Deadlock Rebels, which was released on June 1. The book details the founding of the gang while exploring Ashe and McCree's origins. A free preview of the first chapter of the book is available now. Here's a brief synopsis of what to expect:

“When Ashe is arrested again on the morning of her high school graduation, her estranged and wealthy parents decide to disown her from the family fortune. To steal back what is rightfully hers, Ashe teams up with her omnic butler, BOB the local ruffian Jesse McCree for a series of heists, catapulting the trio into a game of quick cash and dangerous alliances. Along the way, Ashe discovers that family isn't just about blood. It's about the people who protect you when you have your back against the wall. "

Blizzard also debuted one of two new variant covers by Afua Richardson for issue #1 of the Overwatch comic book series: Tracer London Calling. Both covers will be available for purchase exclusively during Free Comic Book Day on August 14, 2021.

New details about Overwatch 2 were recently revealed during a live stream last month, including news that the game could be switching to a 5v5 format. The original Overwatch will get Overwatch 2 PvP maps and new heroes for free, with players essentially only having to pay for Overwatch 2 co-op PvE content. Whether or not Overwatch 2 will also support cross-play remains to be seen.
