Even though Monster Hunter Rise players have access to 14 different weapons, players start the game with a Long Sword for some reason.
Like previous Monster Hunter titles, Monster Hunter Rise gives players access to over a dozen different weapon types. There are heavier weapons like the Great Sword and Hammer, and lighter, more agile weapons like the Insect Glaive and Sword and Shield. Fortunately, players who want to try out different types will be able to use whatever they want, and from there, make whatever upgrades they want. But for some strange reason, the introduction of Monster Hunter Rise automatically equips the player with a Long Sword. Here's how to change weapons so players can choose something that suits their playstyle.
Once Monster Hunter Rise players have access to Kamura Village and are able to roam freely, players must head to one of the loot boxes around the village. There is one next to the village quest counter and another in the meeting center where players can participate in online quests.
Face the item box and press the A button to open the menu. From here, players need to click on “Manage Equipment” and then on “Change Equipment”. On this screen, players can click on the weapon at the top of the list and exchange it for one of Monster Hunter's other 13 weapon types. The weapon will now be equipped to the player for use in any hunt. Players can repeat this process if they want to try out another weapon, but they should be aware that these weapons are lower tier and will need to be upgraded at Smithy if players want to use them for more advanced missions.

How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor
If players feel they are not getting much use out of their current weapons in the field, they can choose to upgrade each weapon, but this will require certain materials and other resources. Hamon the Blacksmith is located next to the Village Quest Counter and he will be able to help hunters in difficulty. Most starter weapons will need Iron Ore and Zenny to upgrade. Money can be obtained by completing quests or selling items, and iron ore can be mined at various mining locations in the game's first area, Shrine Ruins.
Monster Hunter Rise is available for the Nintendo Switch and a PC version is expected to launch in early 2022.
