This page contains information on capturing and recording video footage using the PlayStation 5 device. This can be done in a number of ways, including local recordings made through PlayStation 5 systems as well as using third-party capture software.
How to record video using the Create button
When playing a game for which you want to record a video sequence, you have several options on how to record and edit the desired sequence:
- Pressing the Create button once will bring up the creation controls – which will allow you to start a recording or record something that has already happened.
- By default pressing the create button twice will automatically save your most recent gameplay
When choosing to record recent gameplay, you will have the option to record different durations, including 15s, 30s, 3m, 5m, 15m, 30m and 1 full hour. Choosing to start a recording will also allow you to record up to a full hour of gameplay.
The recorded images will be saved to your Media Gallery in the Storage menu via Settings and will be recorded at the standard resolution 1920x1080p by default.

From your PS5's Settings menu, you can select the Captures and Stream option to edit aspects of your recordings. This includes the shortcuts you can change for pressing the create button, the length of a recently saved game video clip, the file type of the video (WebM or MP4), and more.
You can also choose to have manual recordings save footage in 4K resolution, although it can take up a lot more space than your standard recordings. Note that 4K recording can only be done in advance, as past gameplay can only be saved in resolution up to 1080p.
Many of these settings can also be applied by pressing the create one button and selecting the icon on the right side.
How to record the game using capture devices
For those who wish to record or stream their footage to their computer or external hard drive via capture devices, it is possible to use hardware such as Elgato or Atomos recording devices – however, some settings may need to be changed to ensure that the game is recorded properly.
Note: Whenever you try to use a capture device to stream or record images, you must disable HDCP on the PlayStation 5. This can be done in Settings > System > HDM I and turning off the feature Enable HDCP . However, this may disable certain apps, so you may need to enable it again to use other console features.
In addition, the audio properties of the PlayStation can make it difficult for capture devices to automatically detect all audio channels during recording or streaming.
If you encounter audio problems while recording, it is recommended to change the AV amplifier settings to decrease the number of audio channels from 7.1 to 2. This can be done in Settings > Sound > Audio Output and change your output device to HDMI (AV Amplifier) to unlock controls to change the number of audio channels.
