Microsoft revealed that Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance will be released on Xbox Game Pass on day one when it launches next month. Dark Alliance is an upcoming co-op action RPG starring the Companions of the Hall from Dungeons & Dragons.
The story of Dark Alliance follows the events of Drizzt Do'Urden's first novel, The Crystal Shard. An incredibly powerful magical crystal, called Crenshinibon, appeared in the Icewind Dale region of the Forgotten Realms D&D campaign setting. Crenshinibon has the ability to grant incredible magical powers to those who wield it. Dark Alliance involves various monstrous factions trying to find Crenshinibon. It's up to Drizzt, Bruenor Battlehammer, Cattie-brie and Wulfgar to stop them, with up to four players taking on the roles of all Companions as they fight their way through enemy hordes. The game is not directly connected to previous Dark Alliance games (although the former was recently re-released on consoles) as they are set in different parts of the Forgotten Realms.

It was recently revealed that Dark Alliance will be released on June 22nd. Microsoft announced on the official Xbox website that Dark Alliance will be coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one. It will be available to Game Pass subscribers on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can also play the game by streaming it via smart devices. Dark Alliance will have crossplay between consoles and PC at launch.
Dark Alliance marks another major third-party game Microsoft will release on Game Pass, with the latest being Outriders. Game Pass has recently hoarded older games that skipped Xbox systems for the first time, like Dragon Quest Builders 2 and Octopath Traveller, but it's the addition of games that are full-price titles on other platforms that really make the service stand out.
The Dark Alliance series has been dormant since 2004, with the release of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2 for PS2 and Xbox. The original game's revival on modern systems and rumors that a possible Dark Alliance 2 is coming back prove that the Baldur's Gate spin-off franchise is making a comeback, even as Baldur's Gate 3 is gearing up for its release. Dungeons & Dragons in general are returning to the video game world in a big way, and PC/Xbox fans will have the chance to return to Icewind Dale via a subscription to the Game Pass and see if it was worth the wait.
Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on June 22, 2021.
