What are the best multiplayer games on PC? We've collected shooters, MOBAs and similar indies from Fortnite to Overwatch

Sometimes it's not the game that shines, but the players. Intricate gameplay and brilliant visuals only go so far to make a multiplayer title standout, your humans can provide surprises and schemes that turn the first-person shooter or puzzler into a gladiator showdown or co-op crusade. That's the secret to the best multiplayer games on PC.

Fast and frantic or tense and calculated, the best PvP games come in all shapes and sizes. But they are all connected for the simple pleasure of interacting with other humans.

Whether it's a healer and a DPS trying to solve a painstaking flanking maneuver in Overwatch, or a tense head-to-head battle facing off against terrorists in Rainbow Six Siege, these games wouldn't be the same without a bunch of people running around killing, maiming, or, occasionally, helping each other.

So, eliminate those bots, open your friends list, put on your more sociable face and get ready to embrace the best multiplayer games on PC.

The best multiplayer games for PC are:

    • War Thunder

    • Among us
    • Destiny 2
    • Apex Legends
    • Fifteen days
    • Dota 2 / League of Legends
    • Team Fortress 2
    • Overwatch
    • Counterstrike: Global Offensive
    • Warzone

War Thunder is a free-to-play multiplayer game about military vehicles knocking seven bells off each other, whether in aerial dogfights, tank battles or naval skirmishes. That tone might sound familiar, but no free MMO has quite matched what War Thunder has in terms of quality, balance, and the sheer scope of vehicles waiting to be unlocked.

While the multiplayer game began with a humble set of aircraft and ground vehicles that you'll recognize from WW2 games, its myriad of tech trees now encompasses the military histories - past and present, of various nations, from global superpowers to smaller nations. , famous for punching above their weight.

What sets this war game apart from its competitors is its incredibly detailed ballistic modeling and simulation game modes.

A 1v1 between two tanks can be affected by numerous factors such as armor thickness, armor angle, material, projectile size and type, and target distance can be the difference between a bouncing shot and dealing no damage, or piercing and eliminating all the enemy crew.

The more you play, the more you learn to spot different types of vehicles so you can exploit their weaknesses and win the fight with a single well-placed shot. It's an endlessly satisfying cycle, and with hundreds of vehicles up for grabs, it's going to be a long time before you run out of new content.

Riot's ultra-stylish team-based tactical shooter is coming for the CS:GO crown, and it has a lot of shiny new features to set it apart.

The gameplay will be familiar to CS:GO players, five player teams start the match by attacking or defending, and switch in the middle, players must also buy weapons at the beginning of each round, earning money based on their performance in the previous round.

However, crucially, in Valuing players choose from a list of agents, each with unique abilities they can buy each round (and one they get for free). Each Valorant character has its own strategic strengths and weaknesses; some are experts at defending websites, while others set up safe attacks or kills.

While skills play an important role, Valorant still maintains a strong emphasis on weapons use and competitive balance to ensure it is an excellent game for high-end gaming – as evidenced by its thriving eSports scene.

If you haven't heard of Between Us yet, that's pretty much yours. The social deduction game soared in popularity last year when its classic formula of multicolored beans stabbing each other in aisles became a true phenomenon. In each lobby, a handful of players are designated Imposters, whose job it is to sabotage and kill unsuspecting Crewmates without being discovered.

The game ends when the Imposters outrun the Crewmates, or when the Crewmates discover the Imposters' identity and eliminate them during emergency meetings. This can be started by uncovering a body or pressing a big red button in the meeting room.

Whether you want to participate in massive PvE raids, duel others in PvP, or even combine elements of both in PvPvE, Destiny 2 ticks all the boxes when it comes to the best multiplayer games.

A few years after launch, Destiny 2 is better than ever, with the Forsaken expansion addressing many weaknesses and a free Steam release bringing the game to new audiences.

Loot unites all multiplayer arms, so no matter how you're playing Destiny 2, your goal is always to acquire powerful new weapons and armor like Destiny 2 Exotics .

Each mission completed, miniboss killed, and PvP match won contribute by rewarding you with more powerful gear, creating a fantasy of continuous, near-infinite power.

    Apex Legends

From hypermobile gameplay that lends itself to flanking maneuvers to respawn beacons that bring your teammates back into the fight after the death, the agile shooter of Respawn it sports all the usual trappings of the best multiplayer games.

Where it really excels, however, is its ability to bring everyone into the fold with its ping system.

If you feel uncomfortable talking to strangers with your mic or just don't want to, you can still contribute by pinging enemies, places of interest, and even the best weapons. Apex Legends that you want or think others might find useful.

The post-apocalyptic shooter is also at the beginning of its life cycle, which means now is an excellent time to jump in and try our tips from the Apex Legends

There will also be a constant stream of new Legends from the Apex Legends for players to sink their teeth in, which promises to update the Battle Royale meta every few months. There's also a high chance that you'll bump into someone from this office. Be kind, please.

Epic's shooter first emerged as an intriguing mix of construction, sandbox, and survival elements. The way Fortnite: Save the World original, in which you build strongholds to combat a serious zombie threat, has long been eclipsed by the world-conquering Fortnite Battle Royale.

Thanks to some phenomenal Fortnite player numbers, and the fact that it's way more polished than PUBG, Epic's latest extravaganza on its feet is one of the best multiplayer PC games.

Your position in the big Fortnite vs. PUBG depends on personal preference. Both are games Battle Royale strong with dedicated communities, but Fortnite's compelling Pixar brilliance, accessibility, helped considerably by being free-to-play, and Fortnite's build mechanics give it an edge to some over PUBG's deep detailed military sensibilities. We have no doubt, however, that Epic's cosmetics game is much stronger, the sheer number of skins in Fortnite and Fortnite wraps (weapon and vehicle skins) is mind-boggling.

Now, before you hesitate in aggregating these two rival beasts of the MOBA genre into a single entry, we intend to recommend one or the other, not both, and let's face it, while the mechanics, items, clues, and Ligue of Legends Champions / Dota 2 Heroes offer different gaming experiences, the multiplayer aspect of both games is basically the same.

Gather four friends and find out how each of you deals with guilt and failure, or host a team of four strangers who somehow manage to be way worse than you are in the game, even though statistically they are very close to you in the rankings.

The competitive scene around both games is gigantic, nearly four million people watched the LoL Worlds semifinals simultaneously in November 2019, and in August 2019, the Dota's The International prize pool reached over $34 million, the highest ever. e-sports history award.

League of Legends is Twitch's most-watched game of 2019, and with around eight million concurrent players a day versus Dota's average of 400.000, it's clear which of the two is more popular. That doesn't mean LoL is necessarily the best game, but the numbers make sense when you consider how Riot produces absolute hits to promote its MOBA.

We recommend that you try a few matches in both games before deciding which MOBA is the best for you, but if you are looking for a game that is a totally different experience, each match depends on your draft vs your opponent's draft, i.e. you and your team can enjoy a new challenge night after night – we recommend jumping into LoL or Dota 2.

If you weren't there when Team Fortress 2 came out, it's hard to express the delirious and unexpected delight that was in 2007. Longer in development than Pangea, TF2 surprised everyone when it finally arrived in its bright, upbeat Pixar glow.

Rather than the anticipated amalgamations of biceps and military attire we'd been hoping for, its cast is a brigade of slapstick comedians whose interplay sparked frequent, witty, genuine laughter.

Each had skills and abilities that intertwined beautifully. Heavy reaps Soldier. Engineer builds ward to take down Heavy. The spy destroys the sentry.

The Pyro incinerates the Spy. Sniper defeats Pyro. Scout hits Sniper on the head and runs away. Demo destroys Scout with his sticky bombs, then goes back to showing people. No, not like that. The doctor looks at the Uber meter and licks his lips.

It's a very different game today, now downright baffling for players who lost the game. Still, the rich visual design, the sheer strength of its cast, and the interplay between classes preserve it as one of the best multiplayer games out there.

An enduring classic... even if the emergence of Fortnite led to the biggest drop in Team Fortress 2 player counts ever.

Combining Team Fortress 2 e League of Legends, Overwatch remains a phenomenon and easily one of the best multiplayer games ever made. A class-based multiplayer shooter that owes a lot to TF2's art style, payload maps, and asymmetrical combat, Overwatch it also owes a lot to LoL's diverse roster and essential team play.

As our analysis of Overwatch for PC, its tantalizing recipe for multiplayer greatness is a mix of popular styles brimming with possibilities that have captured the imaginations and nights out of the masses.

This is even apparent on a quick visit to the fantastically busy Overwatch reddit, where you're sure to never be hungry for GIFs.

Blizzard is continually updating the game and adding to its impressively diverse and colorful roster with new Overwatch heroes as well.

Want to master the best Overwatch characters? Get ready to commit months to the color blaster. Somehow, Overwatch gets even better while maintaining a careful competitive balance.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has a dismal origin story. An update to Valve's previous update of a Half-Life 1 mod, CS:GO was conceived as nothing more ambitious than a console port, an experiment to see if gamers of PlayStation e Xbox would get involved with the name Counter-Strike

And if PC gamers wanted to give it a try, what's the problem? We happen to have one of the best multiplayer PC games.

Thanks to regular updates from CS: GO , Shooter Sensation is consistently one of the most played games on Steam. Their weapon skins support an entire artisanal industry of trading venues. It is an ultra-competitive, high-prize sport. You cannot move on Twitch to CS:GO streams.

Its popularity is evident, but its quality requires a deeper understanding of its appeal, both as a nostalgia trip and as a fast-paced, well-supported shooter with cutting-edge viewer tools.

Valve's masterpiece is ready for tactical exploration, which means you should check out our CS:GO tips if you want to succeed. Packed with sharp-gun feedback, this FPS is more comforting than Mom's homemade apple pie.

The battle royale game of Call of Duty arrived relatively late for the BR party, arriving in March 2020, but gained a large following.

The free-to-play game was initially released as part of Modern Warfare, but when Black Ops: Cold War was released, all new weapons have been integrated into Warzone, the game also receives regular major updates resulting in an ever-changing meta.

As far as Battle Royale games go, it's particularly fast and aggressive, as players can respawn if they win a 1v1 in the Gulag or are brought back into the fray by their teammates who spend money at a Buy Station.

You can also configure your chosen loadouts in Warzone and purchase them in-game, so players can customize their weapons with a variety of unlockable attachments to try and get the upper hand on their opponents.

The moment someone at Psyonix said “how about football… but with cars?” one of the best multiplayer games for PC. Despite the first failed attempt, the success of the Rocket League it's because of its aerodynamic design, you simply push the ball across a field with a car. It's hardly something only hardcore petrolheads can understand.

Don't confuse simplicity with lack of depth, however. As we highlighted in our PC review of Rocket League , master all the tips – key Rocket League and successfully passing, shooting and scoring is an exciting learning curve.

This leads to a career, not just for new musical talent, your body slowly advancing in its seat as the tension builds. Headshots to pitchers cost ten per cent, but a goal in Rocket League is something special.

The exceptionally most sophisticated online games in Rocket League are even better in split-screen local multiplayer. Everyone in the room will ooh-ing and aahh-ing as the ball whizzes from one end of the field to the other, punctuated by an obligatory elbow to the ribs to avoid an inevitable goal.

Despite surface-level similarities with the dear CS: GO of FPS, Ubisoft has made bracing a wall or installing barbed wire as heroic as not aiming at an enemy from two roofs away.

Perhaps more than even the best multiplayer games, Rainbow Six Siege is about planning, communicating and executing a team-based strategy.

Rainbow Six it made its name by taking a quieter, more thoughtful approach than the bombastic shooters it debuted against in the late '90s, and in doing so, it made you feel like a highly trained MP5 expert, wearing goggles and a muffler.

The latest entry in the series evokes the same sentiment, despite the meta changes introduced by a flurry of operators. Rainbow Six Siege with more new operators arriving in regular post-launch updates. If that sounds intimidating, Ubi offers a Rainbow Six Siege Starter Edition so you can try it for a lower price.

Although, of course, there is destruction. Large chunks of concrete that can kick up fine concrete dust with each round. Just make sure you don't get your fancy new cosmetics dirty. Part of being 'good' at Siege is knowing each map intimately and coordinating your team accordingly.

The depth, tension of cutting nails and the tactical potential of Rainbow Six Siege provide a memorable cat and mouse multiplayer experience. No wonder Siege's future is bright.

As an esport, it is going global, while also allowing inexperienced high school students the chance to achieve major tournament glory.

    ARMA 3

Arma 3 is almost as close to finding itself on a real battlefield, babbling unintelligibly as the helicopters and tanks pass by.

Large-scale battles and ultra-realism aren't the only intimidating things about Arma 3. Populated by a strong-willed community with unparalleled experience levels, the game's players know things you didn't know you knew.

As far as fake guns go, this is one of the best multiplayer games out there, it's no wonder Arma 3's sales are in the millions. Each battle is an immersive spectacle, peppered with complex team chat and ingenious tactical maneuvers (if you're on a good server).

It may still be more buggy than the underside of a rotten branch, but it has done its part to bring the battlefields of PlayerUnknown. Enough said.

Titanfall 2 boasts one of the best single-player FPS stories in recent memory. However, as if that wasn't enough, Respawn's majestic mech-based shooter is also one of the best multiplayer games - be sure to read our Titanfall 2 class guide so you can meet your future robot friends.

The heady multiplayer component of Titanium case 2 It's all about interaction. Think of David versus Goliath, except it could be Goliath versus Goliath. So sometimes David is inside Goliath... it doesn't really matter.

The early stages of an online match reek of Call of Duty, you start out as one of five agile riders, using your grappling hook and other gadgets to jump over the opposition and kill. Then everything changes: gigantic 20-foot titans with various weapons and abilities rain down and devastate the battlefield.

Trading an agile and dynamic traverse as a pilot to take control of the slower but far more powerful titan imbues multiplayer rounds with an infinitely satisfying pacing that refines the original's promising core. If you missed Titanfall 2, fix it now with Origin Access.

Don't Starve Together it's a little different from the other games on our best multiplayer games list. It doesn't involve taking on an opposing team, but it does require a lot of teamwork, crafting, building, and – crucially – not dying.

In this survival game, you and up to four other players are thrown into a sketchy Tim Burton-style world filled with violent horrors and terrifying nightmarish creatures.

These monsters are the least of your problems as you struggle to survive, keeping yourself fed, warm, dry and sane. If that wasn't complicated enough, each night, creatures emerge from the shadows ready to put out your fire.

In Don't Starve Together, you'll need to research new gear to survive the changes of the seasons and progress through the world, all while collecting resources and trying desperately, well, not to starve.

Rockstar's open-world game is nearly eight years old – shocking, we know – but Los Santos is still a popular destination for online multiplayer. In Grand Theft Auto Online, players create their own rising criminal before connecting to a multiplayer server and teaming up with other players to complete jobs and heists.

There's also a wealth of player-created content, including races and deathmatches for you to compete in.

On the unofficial side of things, GTA Online RPG servers are especially popular with content creators on Twitch and YouTube, as players make great use of The Bustling Metropolis of Los Santos to create their own wild, improvised stories.

So there you have it, the best multiplayer games on PC. Of course, we all know that playing multiplayer is only fun when you're winning, so be sure to read our Fortnite Battle Royale tips and check out all the new Overwatch heroes for online success.

Many of the best PC games to come also have exciting new multiplayer modes. That means there's never been a better time to explore your competitive side. Playing solo is fine and all, but beating other players makes the best multiplayer modes incredibly more sophisticated.
