It is very difficult for Amazon to release a game: the producer announced the cancellation of the MMORPG based on The Lord of the Rings. The title was promised to arrive in 2022, but the contract with developer Athlon Games is terminated.

The reason for the beef was the lack of an agreement with the Chinese giant Tencent. This is a big dogfight and the MMORPG has lost out in history. Originally, Athlon Games announced the project as the result of a partnership with the rights holders of The Lord of the Rings franchise. Since then, the studio has been assimilated by Tencent. On the other hand, Amazon seems to have taken over the rights to the brand, including the production of a series for its streaming service.
The professionals from Amazon Game Studios who were involved in the project are being reassigned to other jobs. This cancellation adds to a growing list of titles that the producer is unable to deliver. Crucible didn't even see the light of day and was canceled in the beta testing phase. Breakaway hit shelves but was also canceled months after release. The last hope is now in the hands of New World, which is suffering successive delays.
The clash of interests between Amazon and Tencent may have buried this new MMORPG, but good old The Lord of the Rings Online is still going strong, for anyone interested.
